Chris Yeaton, Adam Werner & Brenda Lipincott on Hawaiian slack key & American fingerstyle guitar, January 22, 2010 : Chris Yeaton told us something about how the Hawaiian slack key guitar style originated. It was introduced to the islands by Mexican cowboys. When they left, Hawaiians adapted the slack key style to Hawaiian music. Most slack-key tunings are derived from a classically tuned guitar, which is detuned by slacking the strings until they form a single cord. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slack-key_guitar)

Chris was born in Hawaii and learned from master slack-key guitarists Keola Beamer and John Keawe. He and Adam Werner are among the featured musicians of the Woodsong Acoustics Group (http://www.woodsongacoustics.com).

Adam Werner, from Los Angeles, is a solo acoustic guitarist who plays unconventional fingerstyle guitar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingerstyle_guitar) with provocative percussive elements. He plays extensively as a solo guitarist and together with Chris Yeaton and the Woodsong Acoustics Group.

Will Durst, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Confusion, January 16, 2010 : Just when we thought there was nothing to laugh about the current state of politics, Lt. Gov. Bill Durst swept into Grass Valley to make us laugh until it hurt. According to the New York Times, Durst is "quite possibly the best political satirist working in the country today." He is an equal opportunity offender:

"They say Barack is arrogant, but at least he’s smart. Because we tried arrogant and stupid and that didn’t work."

"Why do you think the Democrats are so intent on passing the stem cell bill? They’re depending on that research to generate a spine."

"I never thought America could cast aside its prejudices and actually vote for… a Harvard Law graduate."

Didgeridu Summit - Ondrej Smeykal & Stephen Kent, January 9, 2010 : Ondrej Smeykal and Stephen Kent appeared together at the Center for the Arts. Both didge players compose their own music, with very different styles. I'm no expert, but to my ear Stephen's music was more closely connected to traditional aboriginal music, whereas Andrej's music was more spacey, reminding me of the melodic electronic music of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulz.

The Smothers Brothers at the Veterans Hall in Grass Valley, October 17, 2009 : The Center for the Arts brought the Smothers Brothers to Grass Valley in October. The show was held at the Grass Valley Veterans' Hall because it was expected the crowd would be large. In fact, the show sold out. As a fund raiser for the non-profit cultural organization, dinner tables were set up in front of the stage and dinner patrons with VIP tickets had a chance to meet the Smothers Brothers behind stage after the show.
